Finding the Best Links to the Job Sites!
If you’re like most e-job hunters, you probably turn to the job sites first in search of your dream job. After all, there are millions of jobs listed online and some lucky e-job comber has to fill those positions, right? Wrong! Job sites have been up and running (and thriving as e-businesses!) for several years, but the rules of the job search have not changed. Most job hunters find their jobs through some form of networking.
The key to successfully using the job listings is to first know the employer. If you don’t know their reasoning for posting the job online, then you probably won’t know if they’ve already got somebody earmarked for the job or simply posting it to conform with personnel policies.
All hope is not lost, however, as there is still some value to the job sites. The job descriptions can be very helpful in terms of writing your resume, identifying company-specific jargon, and writing cover letters. Also, if you find a job that is just right for you, first identify the company and then try to network your way into the job as opposed to applying for the job online. To find more tips on how to make the job banks work to your advantage, read the book Sams Teach Yourself E-Job Hunting Today: Planning Your Career and Searching for Jobs Online (Macmillan USA, 2000).
Searching Multiple Job Sites at One Time
The Job-Search-Engine
www.job-search-engine.com
This site is not a job bank, nor does it offer reviews of the different job sites. Instead, it actually searches many of the more popular job sites and returns a listing of jobs from these sites that match your query.
Career Builder (now includes CareerPath.com)
www.careerbuilder.com
This site no longer directly links you to the daily classified want ads from more than 90 newspapers around the country. However, you can search for jobs by city and identify which job sites and newspaper classifieds you want the search engine to search for you. Although this site has extensive search capabilities, most of the newspapers that were formerly included in CareerPath.com are no longer included in this site.
Career Fairs
Career Conferences of America
www.careerconferences.com

America’s Job Bank
